ROYAL BLACKHEATH GOLF CLUB

MJ Rooney were appointed to build a new pavilion at the Grade I listed Royal Blackheath Golf Club, home to Eltham Lodge, built in 1664. Working next to such an important historic building meant the project had to be carried out with great care, delivering a structure that was practical for the club and sympathetic to its surroundings.

The pavilion sits on ten pad foundations and is formed around a steel frame, wrapped in oak to match the character of the Lodge. To achieve the open span the club wanted, without placing columns through the centre, we worked closely with structural engineers and used 4D modelling to plan the build in detail before work began.

The history of the site posed challenges, including the risk of unexploded ordnance from wartime bombing. This required a careful excavation strategy and enhanced safety measures. The finished pavilion now provides a versatile, weatherproof space that complements the architecture of Eltham Lodge.
